The Resources Department is comprised of many areas that perform
the technical processing functions listed below.
Authorities
(280-7281)
Authority control maintains the integrity of the online catalog database
by keeping the constantly changing subject, name, and series headings
consistent and up-to-date. The bibliographic entries from the cataloging,
order, and serials are processed through authority control to ensure
that items in our electronic catalog can be effieciently and accurately
located.
Cataloging
(280-6553)
Cataloging is responsible for processing books, theses and other non-serial
publications, in print and nonprint formats, that have been received
in the Library. The staff prepares the bibliographic data for display
and access in SIRSI and handles
the physical processing of the materials to prepare them for the shelves.
Collection
Management (280-6499)
Under the coordination of Collection Management, subject specialist
librarians are responsible for building a collection of materials
that support the broad range of academic programs offered at UNO.
These bibliographers work with the
faculty liaisons in every academic
department to establish proper collection levels for each subject
area and to work towards acquiring the materials that are appropriate
to these levels. Bibliographers are ultimately responsible for the
collection, and a breakdown of the the
Library of Congress call numbers indicates which bibliographer is
responsible for each sector of the collection.
Current
Periodicals (280-7168)
Current Periodicals is responsible for displaying the most recent
issues of the more than 4,500 titles that the library currently subscribes
to. The staff is also responsible for preparing the monthly bindery
shipments. Bound issues of these titles can be found by discipline
on the appropriate floors of the library. Current issues of U.S. and
foreign newspapers are located in the Current Periodicals area. Older
issues of the newspapers and some journals can be found in the Microfilm
Room.
Orders
(280-6552)
This area is responsible for receiving orders for books from library
faculty and university library liason faculty (via a Book Purchase Request Form).
Books are ordered from a number of different vendors, primarily including
BNA, MidWest,
and BookHouse. Before the book is ordered it is searched in OCLC
and the bibliographic information is exported to SIRSI. The on-line
computer will show a temporary number for the book and will also show
that it is on order. When the book is received it is then sent to
the Cataloging or Serials for further processing.
Serials
(280-6545)
Serials is responsible for acquiring and cataloging the serials collected
at Earl K. Long Library. This can include
newspapers, magazines, journals, books in series, services, conference
proceedings, transactions, reports, papers of societies, or any other
publication issued in sequence with no intention of cessation. Serials
is also responsible for updating the Serials Record List, reconciling
bindery invoices, vendor invoices, and managing the serials' budget.
