POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
COMPUTER PROGRAMMER-TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT
EARL K. LONG LIBRARY, UNIVERSITY OF NEW ORLEANS

SUMMARY: The Computer Programmer is generally responsible for writing computer code, maintaining, testing and improving software applications for use by the library.  This will include writing auxiliary applications for the Library’s Integrated Library System (ILS) SirsiDynix and web applications to support the Library’s public web interface and functionality. This position will serve on all of the technology teams in the library including Applications, Networking and Sirsi.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Modify existing programs to conform to system changes, upgrades or to make improvements in the existing program. 
  • Evaluate software applications used by the library to make sure they operate efficiently. Work with the team using the application to make improvements, additions or modifications needed.
  • Write programming code in the appropriate languages needed to create software applications as requested by the Technology Department and/or end users.
  • Evaluate user needs and design and create software applications to meet those needs. Review and analyze system specifications to determine whether all required elements have been included. Consult with users and Technology Team members to gather information about program needs, objectives, functions, features, and input and output requirements. 
  • Document applications carefully so applications can be easily supported by others.
  • Participate with other Technology Department staff in long and short range technology planning and implementing of Technology services and programs within budgetary guidelines. 
  • Be a team member and contribute to the tasks of the Technology Department teams.
  • Assist the Networking team in supporting the Library’s infrastructure.
  • Communicate with other entities on and off campus to achieve library technology objectives.
  • Offer support, as necessary, to end users of the software applications.
  • Cooperate with other Technology Team members on requests for assistance. 

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required: Academic: Bachelor Degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems or related field; or industry certification in related field(s).  Strong knowledge of modern computer programming languages, such as VB, and one or more languages from the following list: C++, C#, Java, JSP, ASP, .Net, SQL; Strong knowledge of creating and deploying web-based applications; ability to read and interpret documents such as procedure manuals, software specifications or programming code; ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to all levels of technology users; strong organizational skills to be able to organize, prioritize, plan and complete projects in a timely manner in order to adhere to timelines for project completion and meet deadlines; ability to work with minimal supervision and follow through on commitments; ability to work with a team, and approach others in a tactful manner; ability to provide excellent customer service to the end users; adaptability to changes in the work environment; manage competing demands; change approach or method to best fit the situation. 

Preferred: Experience working in libraries; experience working with computer networks.
Salary:   $40,000 per fiscal year.
