Curriculum

Purpose The collection supports present and anticipated teaching and research in the field of Curriculum & Instruction. At present, the central focus of the department and chief interests of the faculty are encompassed in the following areas: early childhood education; elementary and secondary curriculum in the various content areas (mathematics, social studies, science, english, reading, music, and foreign languages); library science, children's and adolescent literature, instructional media and computer instruction; global and multicultural education; literacy and language education; instructional leadership; teacher education; and gender studies. The department offers the following degrees: Ph.D., D.Ed., M.A., M.Ed., B.S. and B.A. Undergraduate students interested in pursuing a degree that leads to Louisiana State Teacher Certification may choose from the following majors: elementary education; secondary education (specializations include: Mathematics, Science —Biology, Chemistry, or Geology, Social Studies, English, Foreign Languages, Music, and Human Performance); elementary-secondary education (may specialize in Human Performance or Music Education—vocal or instrumental). Students in the Master's program may choose one of the following concentrations: curriculum generalist, elementary generalist, secondary generalist, early childhood education, middle school education, adult education, program evaluation, technology in education, elementary mathematics education, elementary science education, elementary social studies education, English as a second language, elementary instructional leadership, secondary instructional leadership, reading/language arts specialist, library science, secondary English education, secondary mathematics education, secondary science education, and secondary social studies education. Doctoral programs in Curriculum and Instruction are offered in three major concentrations: General Curriculum, Literacy Studies and Language Education, and Teacher Development. They are designed to develop an understanding of the interaction of theory and practice in culturally diverse, metropolitan, educational settings. Doctoral students engage in reflective inquiry and conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research in their respective fields as well as develop their professional competencies in instructional and curriculum leadership. In addition to the support for the specific degree programs of the C&I Department, the collection also serves as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in other disciplines. Related departments include Special Education, Human Performance & Health Promotion, Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Music, as well as all the Liberal Arts and College of Science departments listed above in which students may concentrate. of Subject Materials dealing with instructional media, computer applications and equipment used in educational or school libraries are also selectively acquired. Publications dealing with methods in literacy, adult, multicultural, and global education, and teacher development are also necessary to the collection. Textbooks are acquired on a very selective basis, and usually only at the advanced level. Types
of Material Publications of U.S. government agencies are acquired through the U.S. Federal Depository Program. Microforms especially those emanating from the Educational Resources Information Service (ERIC) are also acquired. Serial backfiles and subscriptions and education related newspapers are also considered for purchase in microform. Proceedings and publications of various education related organizations and societies are selectively acquired. Standardized tests are generally not acquired although materials reviewing them usually are considered for purchase. Date
