The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and supports an M.S. degree in Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Applied Science. In addition to the support for the specific degree programs of the Mechanical Engineering Department, the collection also serves as a resource for undergraduate and graduate students and faculty in other disciplines. Related colleges, departments, and programs which cover subjects of interest to mechanical engineering include Physics, Civil Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management and NAME.

Language
The language of acquisition is English; materials in other languages will not be acquired.

Chronological Guidelines
The main focus will be on recent research; historical material will be considered if it meets the needs of the department and the library.

Geographical Guidelines
Geographical guidelines are not relevant to collection development in Mechanical Engineering. All geographical regions are acceptable for acquisition.

Treatment of Subject
Theory and applied research are both of interest. Computer applications, practice and methods, statistical or mathematical treatment, equipment, legal aspects, economics and management or administration of mechanical engineering are collected. Textbooks are not purchased but may be collected if donated.

Types of Materials
Monographs and serial publications form the basis for acquisition. Reference materials, including bibliographies, indices, handbooks, and dictionaries are acquired. Publications and proceedings of national and international organizations, societies, and congresses concerned with mechanical engineering are acquired on a highly selective basis. Lab manuals are not purchased, but may be added to the collection if donated. Publications of U. S. Government agencies are acquired through the U. S. Federal Depository program.

Date of Publication
Emphasis is on material published within the past five years. Current materials are most important. Retrospective materials may be selectively acquired.
