Mission Statement of Collection Development

The University of New Orleans is Louisiana's major urban university, providing support for the educational, economic, social and cultural development of the state's largest and most diverse metropolitan region. The Earl K. Long Library faculty and staff are active participants in that enterprise and are committed to the highest standards of service and access to library resources.
The Earl K. Long Library builds and maintains the best possible collection for the ongoing learning, teaching, and research needs of students, faculty and staff.

Library personnel teach essential information skills on a daily basis to library users so that they may make full utilization of the Library's collections and services. Through an organized program of library instruction for students, faculty and staff, the Library provides opportunities to learn how to access information in different formats so that they can continue life-long learning.

The Earl K. Long Library provides students, faculty, staff and the greater New Orleans community optimum access to the UNO Library collection and to the world of information beyond the library.

Library staff offers quality reference and information services that enhance the educational experience of the UNO community and also the educational experience of the New Orleans metropolitan area's diverse constituents who use the library.

The Earl K. Long Library stands poised to take advantage of rapidly changing access to electronic resources for library users: electronic and remote access to databases, full text, and Internet resources through a well developed Web Page.

In all its actions and endeavors, the Library supports and abides by the "Library Bill of Rights" of the American Library Association, which guarantees freedom of access to materials and ideas and freedom from censorship, and the Americans with Disabilities Act which assures reasonable accommodation in public facilities for those with disabilities.
