The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material is not placed on hold by another patron. Reserve material checkout periods vary (e.g. two hours in library only, overnight, three days, or seven days) according to what a professor designates. Restricted circulation materials (bound and loose periodicals) do not circulate to undergraduate students.

UNO Graduate Students
UNO Graduate Students may have up to up to 120 books checked out at any one time. The checkout period is for three weeks with unlimited renewals until the end of the semester when all library items must be returned. Reserve material checkout periods vary according to what a professor designates. Bound and loose periodicals circulate for three hours to graduate students. Other restricted circulation items (bibliographies) may be checked out for three days.

Graduate students enrolled in 7000 level courses for thesis and dissertation research (GradThesis Students) are allowed to check out books for the semester with the understanding that any book requested by another is to be returned within a week of being contacted. GradThesis students will need to make Circulation Staff aware of their enrollment in 7000 level classes at the beginning of every semester as this is a manual process instituted by the Circulation Staff to accommodate research needs. Books must be returned at the end of every semester.

UNO Staff
UNO Staff may have up to 120 books checked out at any one time. The checkout period is for three weeks with unlimited renewals. Materials that have been placed on hold by another patron can not be renewed. The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material is not placed on hold by another patron. Student Government DVDs may be checked out for seven days only; there are no renewals. Bound and loose periodicals circulate for three hours to staff. Other restricted circulation items (bibliographies) may be checked out for three days.

UNO Faculty
UNO Faculty may have up to 120 books checked out at any one time. Faculty has an annual due date which ends in the spring semester. Faculty have unlimited renewals unless the items have been recalled by another patron. Faculty is asked to recognize the need to share limited resources with colleagues and students. The checkout period for CDs and videos is seven (7) days, with one renewal if the material has not been recalled by another patron. Student Government DVDs may be checked out for seven days only; there are no renewals. Bound periodicals circulate for three days to faculty. Loose or current periodicals circulate for three hours to faculty. Other restricted circulation items (bibliographies) may be checked out for three days. Limited circulation of Louisiana Collection materials is available with permission from the department.

Faculty and Proxy – Each faculty member can assign one UNO student or staff member as a proxy. A proxy can check out books as if he/she was the faculty member so items will have an annual due date and be on the faculty member’s record. The proxy may also pick up articles or ILL books for the faculty member. The proxy should show his/her own UNO ID when picking up materials at the Circulation desk. The faculty member will need to fill out and sign an application card at the Circulation desk indicating the UNO student’s name and the term of coverage, not to exceed one year from the date of application. A “Note” is included on the faculty member’s record showing the proxy name and expiration date. Proxy cards will have to be renewed upon expiration.

Retired Faculty will be accorded the following library privileges, which were approved by the UNO Dean's Council in October 2006:

  1. All retired faculty must obtain an ID that indicates "Retired Faculty" status in order to check anything out.
  2. Borrowing privileges for all library items will remain the same as for current faculty, with the sole exception being that books will be returned at the end of each semester, rather than in May of each year.
  3. They will have access to Interlibrary Loan.
  4. They can obtain or retain faculty carrels, if space permits and the needs of current faculty are met.
  5. They can use our subscription electronic resources and databases on campus, but our licenses will not permit us to allow them remote access.

Visiting Faculty can acquire privileges once a written letter from the Department Chair has been received and a PeopleSoft number has been obtained. The Chair’s letter must state that he/she will assume full, financial responsibility for all library materials used or checked out by the visitor. We also require a start and ending date. If a PeopleSoft number has been obtained, a UNO ID can be issued. If not, a temporary library card will be issued. The Chair’s letter will be kept on file.

Research and Technology Park borrowers
Research and Technology Park borrowers will need a UNO ID. This ID will include a PeopleSoft number and will be designated as “Research Park” on the ID. An application, available at http://library.uno.edu/about/policy/rtpa.doc will need to be completed and submitted to the Circulation desk. The application can also be obtained at the Circulation desk. Privileges include being able to checkout 120 items for 3 weeks, unlimited renewals as long as an item has not been requested by another, and 3 hours for journals. Please see http://library.uno.edu/about/policy/rtp.doc for details. The card will expire on the last day of June each year and must be renewed. Borrowers will be directly responsible for fines and lost books.

LALINC “Louisiana Academic Library Information Network Consortium” Borrowers
This reciprocal program allows certain borrowers in good standing at their institutions the right to check out items at other participating college and university libraries throughout Louisiana. The list of participating Louisiana Academic Libraries, and the level of access they allow, can be viewed at this chart (PDF).

UNO faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduates (with permission from the Honors Department) who wish to borrow books from other institutions must first fill out a yellow information card at our Public Services Desk on the first floor of the UNO library. Staff will then issue our patron a LALINC card with their name, university ID number, and a semester long expiration date for students and staff. Faculty will be given an annual expiration date, ending in the summer semester. This card should then be presented at the participating library whenever the patron wishes to check out items. Program participants are expected to abide by the lending institution's guidelines, and privileges may be canceled at the lending institution’s request for noncompliance. If you are traveling some distance, it is best to contact that library beforehand to inquire about any special requirements.

Faculty, staff, and graduate students from other participating institutions may check out books from UNO's library after first obtaining a similar LALINC card from their home library (with a valid expiration date), and by showing it, along with a school photo ID, at our Public Services Desk. Guest borrowers will be asked to fill out a brief information card with necessary contact information, and our staff will then issue that patron a special borrowers card. LALINC users can check out up to 120 items at a time for three weeks with one renewal.

Special Borrowers

Alumni: Upon presenting a current alumni membership card and a driver's license, UNO alumni may obtain borrowing privileges at the library. These privileges include borrowing five (5) items at a time for a three week period with one renewal. A white, Special Borrower’s card will need to be filled out at the Circulation desk. The Alumni membership must be kept current through the Alumni Association.

Ben Franklin High School (Students and Faculty) must have a blue card issued and signed by Idella Washington, the school librarian, to have a UNO card. A library card is issued in the patron’s name with a SSN and is good for the school year. Patrons can check out five (5) books at a time for three weeks with one renewal. Books will not be held for Ben Franklin students who have not been given a library card. Ben Franklin Faculty has a limit of five (5) items for three weeks with one renewal.

Friends of the UNO library (for LA residents) should apply for membership through Library Administration during regular business hours, 8:00 – 4:30, Monday through Friday, 280.6556. Friends can check out three (3) books for a three week period with one renewal. A white, membership card with the full last name, first name initial and middle name initial, all in caps will be issued for an annual date due every year in October. Troy University members can obtain borrowing privileges by applying for a Friends membership and filling out a white, Special Borrower’s card. They will be able to check out three (3) books for a three week period with one renewal which allows privileges for one year from the date of application.

IELP (Intensive English Language Program) students can check out three (3) books for a three week period with one renewal. We receive a list of student names from the Division of International Education, Metropolitan College (http://ielp.uno.edu) at the beginning of each session. Students will be informed by the program when library privileges are available. For information contact 280.5530 or ielp@uno.edu.
