1. Full Text Articles

The full text databases below provide articles from popular magazines, professional/trade magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers. Databases also may include book chapters and reference materials. While these databases are classified under full text databases, these databases also include citations without text. In that case, you may want to try a different full text database for the possible full text coverage. If you cannot locate the full text, please check the library's online catalog to see if we own the print journal or resort to the interlibrary loan services.

  • Academic Search Premier (EBSCO) UNO

    A multi-disciplinary database provideing full text for more than 4,000 scholarly publications, including full text for more than 3,100 peer-reviewed journals. Coverage spans virtually every area of academic study and offers information dating as far back as 1975
  • Business Source Premier (EBSCO) UNO
    http://library.uno.edu/database/list/bsp.html
    Provides full text for nearly 3,300 scholarly business journals, including full text for more than 1000 peer-reviewed business publications. Coverage includes virtually all subject areas related to business. This database provides full text (PDF) for more than 300 of the top scholarly journals dating as far back as 1922.
  • J-STOR UNO

    JSTOR is an electronic archive of selected scholarly journals in various disciplines. JSTOR attempts to maintain complete journal holdings from the first volume, but current volumes (from the past three to six years) are not included.
  • Regional Business News (EBSCO) UNO

    Provides comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications. Regional Business News incorporates coverage of 75 business journals, newspapers and newswires from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States including New Orleans CityBusiness and Great Baton Rouge Business Report.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic: Business UNO

    Business News - Choose "Business & Finance" to search business and finance news sources and major newspaper stories, "Industry News" for a variety of industry and trade sources on over 50 industries, or "Mergers & Acquisitions" for selected stories from major US and international newspapers, business journals and business wires on corporate mergers and acquisitions.
    Industy & Market - Search sources specific to 28 different industry categories

2. Other Indexes

While the full text databases are sufficient for many research projects, it may be useful to consult other indexes like below for more inforation. Some articles may be found in full text databases above, some may not. If you have a citation without text, you will need to check the library's online catalog for possible print holdings or to use the interlibrary loan service.

3. Company Information

Finding information on a particular company requires a good planning. Depending on the ownership of the company, the process could be quite complicated. Start with company web site and online directories, then use databases listed below for current news and financial information.

    Choose Company Profiles option from the top.

  • MergentOnline UNO
    http://library.uno.edu/database/list/fiso.html
    Provides financial information on over 10,000 U.S. public companies and 17,000 non-U.S. public companies.
    Also includes pdf version of tearsheets of Handbook of Common Stocks and Handbook of NASDAQ Stocks. The library's subscription covers U.S. and International companies.
  • Lexis-Nexis Academic: Business UNO

    Company Financials - NAARS Annual Reports include corporate annual reports from 1972 to 1995, U.S. and international company profiles, bankruptcy reports, disclosure reports, and more. Various publications from Standard and Poor's, Hoover's, Nelson, Disclosure, and Zacks
    SEC Filings and Reports - includes 10K, 10Q, 8K, 20F, annual reports to shareholders, proxy statements, prospectuses, registration statements, and Williams act filings. Coverage varies depending on the forms
  • Hoovers Online (portion free)
    http://www.hoovers.com/
    Provides the company address and phone number, web site, subsidiary locations, stock chart, financial information, names of key people, names of top competitors, links to web sites that compile news articles, and other information for both public and private companies
  • Wall Street Research Net (portion free)
    http://www.wsrn.com/
    Provides profiles for over 29,000 companies, mutual funds, and indexes. Links to SEC documents, company home pages, annual reports, press releases, and other investment information, stock quotes, graphs, and more.
  • EDGAR
    http://www.sec.gov/edgar/searchedgar/webusers.htm
    The electronically filed SEC reports will be available on this site real time.

4. Industry Information

Finding industry information should start with finding standard classification codes like SIC and NAICS. One may want to have both numbers handy because while NAICS is the current standard, many databases still or only use SIC. Industry overviews could be found in Economic Census, Hoovers Online, or Business Source Premier. Rankings, market research, market share, and current trends are to be found by a database searching on newspaper or trade magazine articles.

  • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS)

    Replaced the U.S. Standard Industry Classification (SIC) system. This is the new standard code system to describe business establishments and industries jointly developed by the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Changes are on going. One may search the code by keyword description of the industry. Correspondance table for SIC codes and NAICS codes also available. Use both codes to search industry specific information in the electronic resources.
  • MergentOnline UNO

    If you want to compare a specific public company with peer companies in the same SIC/NAICS code group, click "Advanced Search", search with the industry classification code, and get the customized or standard comparison report.
  • Business Source Premier (EBSCO) UNO

    In addition to searchability of full text articles from professional and popular magazines, the database provides industry overviews from DRI-WEFA, Inc.
  • Business and Industry UNO
    http://library.uno.edu/database/list/busi.html
    Contains important facts, figures and key events for international public and private companies, industries, products, and markets for manufacturing and service industries. No full text.

  • Economic Census
    http://www.census.gov/epcd/www/econ97.html
    Economic Census profiles U.S. economy every 5 years. 2002 Economic Census is under way and data will be available soon.

5. Books

    Click on iLink and search for the titles owned by UNO Library. Includes Federal Documents
    You may borrow books from the UNO Library collection by requesting through the Interlibrary Loan Services.

  • NetLibrary UNO
    http://www.netlibrary.com/
    Access: use username, first name and last name strung together (example: johnsmith) and password given to the registered students
    This collection of electronic books includes many business and finance titles. Entire text of book can be browsed, searched and read online

6. Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan Service will borrow and deliver the materials you need for the research. However, you should allow at least 2-3 weeks for this process.

    Have to establish a user name and password in order to request a material through the form. Please identify yourself as a distance learner. Submit an item request, review and track the request, user history, and renew the material online.
