Indexes
and Databases
The
major journal index in this field is Geographical Abstracts. The current
version of this index is split into two sections, Physical Geography (G
1.G6) and Human Geography (G 1.G59), but the index has used a variety
of formats since 1966, when the library's holdings began. Geo Abstracts,
as the current, two-part version of this index is officially titled, acts
as a subject index for a comprehensive collection of journals in the various
subdisciplines of geography. It is shelved on Index shelf 4.
The
American Geographical Society's Current Geographical Publications (G 112.Z99A47),
which is also shelved on Index shelf 4, takes a different approach. It
indexes the research collection of the society, which is housed at the
University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, and it includes journal articles,
books, pamphlets, and government publications.
Another
good Geography index is Geobasewhich
is an index to 2000 journals in the fields of geology and geography (1989-
).
Also
helpful is the Social Sciences Index (AI 3.S62), which indexes the major
periodicals in each area of the social sciences (i.e., sociology, history,
anthropology, geography, etc.). It is shelved on Index table F.
Of
related interest--
Sociological
Abstracts, because of its comprehensive coverage of the field of sociology,
is of some use in the study of human geography. It is available in several
formats: the book version (HM 1.S634), which is no longer current, shelved
on Index shelf 6, Sociofile (HM 1.S6343), an electronic version is available
through Cambridge Scientific Abstracts.
GeoRef
is essentially an index of the literature in the field of geology, but
it is of some use in the study of physical geography.
