Know your Terminology

GIS Dictionary by The University of Edinburgh and Association for Geographic Information
The dictionary includes definitions for 980 terms compiled from a variety of sources which either relate directly to GIS or which GIS users may come across in the course of their work. The dictionary is also supplemented by 52 diagrams.

Find GIS Data/Resources

  • NHGIS - National Historical Geographic Information System. This organization provides, free of charge, aggregated census data and GIS-compatible boundary files for the United States between 1790 and 2000.
  • Mapping and Cartographic Resources - U.S. Census Bureau. Provides access to 1990 and 2000 data.
    • related Louisiana data from the U.S. Census.
  • geoCommunity - A place for GIS enthsuiasts to gather. Some information is free, some requires a fee.
  • Louisiana DEQ - Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality. Contains maps of LDEQ approved debris sites where hurricane debris is dumped.

Community Resources

Access to GIS Software at UNO Library:

The UNO Library has installed ArcGIS on 8 computers on the 3rd floor of the building. The license for this software allows for educational nonprofit use. The computer lab in room 318 also has this software. This lab is generally open 8am - 4:30 pm Monday - Friday.

Note: This software is a memory hog and can take a couple minutes to load.

Free GIS Software:

GRASS - Geographic Resources Analysis Support System. This is a Geographic Information System (GIS) used for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization.
