Subject Guide: Definitions

Definitions Acts - Legislatively initiated bills which are approved by the specific legislative body and signed by the executive head of a particular government such as a govenor or president. Bill - Proposed legislation. Codes - A compilation of legislative acts sorted into prearranged categories such as the U.S. Code which has 50 titles from Agriculture to War. Some acts don't fit into prearranged categories and are collected in a section that may be titled "general laws" or "statutes at large not in code". Revised Statutes - Rearrangement of legislative acts grouped by subjects. Frequently, some revision work is necessary to update the subject information. This work is done with official legislative sanction. Session Laws or Public Laws - A published document containing all approved acts of a particular legislative session, generally in chronological order. Statute - A law enacted by a legislative branch of a government. These laws attempt to put into absolute language a rule of conduct or law, or establish a rememdy.
