Louisiana and New Orleans Recovery groups In the News Use the Lexis Nexis Academic database to access full-text newspaper articles. Find articles that discuss the who, what, why, where and how of New Orlean's recovery. Population Preparing for Emergencies using census data The Census Bureau has published a post-Katrina population estimate for the affected area. Use these numbers to understand the demographics of the recovery zone. (Excel spreadsheet of population estimates of hurricane affected counties and parishes as of January 1, 2006). The Greater New Orleans Community Data Center has used the census data and applied it to the city's neighborhoods and to the surrounding areas. Politics and Policy Understanding Katrina - Articles on public issues from the Social Science Research Council Use JSTOR to locate articles to help you understand the relationship of the politics and public policy of the past and the present. Also search i-Link the library's online catalog for books and federal documents that discuss the issues and public policy. One of the features of GPO Access gives you access to committee affiliations of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate. You will also want to find out what special interests support the policy makers in congress. Opensecrets.org lets you see who and what organizations supported congressional election campaigns. These facts and figures will help you find a relationship between support and voting habits of congress. Public Opinion Locate public opinion regarding New Orleans recovery in Lexis Nexis Academic: Reference "Polls and Surveys."
