Sarah Towles Reed was born
In 1925 Sarah Reed received a
bachelor of laws degree from
In 1924 Mrs. Reed became a charter
member of the New Orleans Public School Teachers Association (NOPSTA), a union
which later affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers, changing its
name to the New Orleans Classroom Teachers Federation. From the mid-1920s until the mid-1970s she
represented the interests of the teachers' union in lobbying at the state
legislature. After her retirement in
1951 she served as Executive Secretary of the New Orleans Classroom Teachers
Federation.
The collection also includes some
correspondence and records of Mrs. Reed's sister, Miss Roberta Towles, also a
teacher at Sophie B. Wright High School and an active union leader, and of Mrs.
Reed's brother, Dr. John Ker Towles, author of a 1904 Tulane University
master's thesis entitled "Housing Conditions in the Vicinity of St. Mary's
Market, New Orleans" and for many years an economist and statistician for
the Chase Manhattan Bank, New York City.
