Historical Note
The New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation, a non-profit organization
which seeks to promote Hispanic heritage in the city, initiated the first Carnaval in 1989 and continues to
operate the yearly event. The festival
has grown from a single event to a week-long series of sporting contests that
culminate in a three-day festival of continuous live performances by Hispanic
entertainers and includes food and crafts booths. The festival is usually held in the downtown
area of the city on
