Historical Note
The New Orleans Athletic Club traces
its origin to the formation in 1872 of the Independent Gymnastic Club, an
appellation which it thereafter used until it was renamed the New Orleans
Athletic Club in 1929, the same year in which its quarters at
Irwin Felix Poche (1897-1971) was
for many years closely associated with the New Orleans Athletic Club as a
member, an employee, an officer, and editor of The Punch. An account of his numerous activities in this
and other endeavors can be found in an article about his death (Times-Picayune,
May 9, 1971).
