McDonogh No. 11 School, Prieur & Palmyra Sts., New Orleans, La."  Morgan letter accompanied by typescript letter dated June 9, 1926 and receipt dated June 11, 1926 (both on letterhead of S. J. Shwartz & Co., Inc., New Orleans) addressed to Miss Kate Lancaster; concerning purchase of Morgan letter.

Biographical Note

 

 

            David Bannister Morgan (born West Springfield, Mass., 1773 - died Covington, La., July 15, 1848); commanded Louisiana and Mississippi militias at Battle of New Orleans; letter discusses Morgan's actions and observations on the battle; a copy of the present letter was published in The Louisiana Historical Quarterly of January, 1926.

                                    April 15, 1817; June 9, 11, 1926.  Madisonville and New Orleans, La.  24-page manuscript letter on 6 sheets folded double; 1 envelope; 1 page typescript letter; 1 page typescript receipt.

 

                                    Collection file contains a photocopy of the February 28, 1817 issue of The Reporter which contains commentary on the Battle of New Orleans and General Morgan's role in the battle; presumably, Morgan was responding to this commentary in the present letter.  This photocopy may be examined upon request.
